What does Kupaʻa stand for?

A

In ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, Kūpaʻa, as a verb, means to stand fast morally; to continue constant, as a person intent upon their purpose. As an adjective, Kūpaʻa describes something as unmovable; constant, as a memorial pillar.For the purposes of the Kūpaʻa project put on by Kumukahi Health + Wellness, Kūpaʻa can also be an acronym:K - Knowledge, U - Understanding, P - Pride, A - Awareness, A - Action.

What does "māhū" mean?

A

Māhū is a traditional Native Hawaiian term for people who embody both masculine and feminine qualities. The KUPAʻA Project honors māhū as part of Hawaiian cultural history and works to reclaim these cultural narratives with pride.

How does the project address safety concerns?

A

The project creates safe, affirming spaces where youth can explore their identity with pride and free from stigma. It works with schools and community organizations to improve school climate and reduce bullying, while fostering peer support networks that continue beyond the program.

What are the main barriers LGBTQ+ youth face in accessing mental health care?

A

Top barriers include: Needing caregiver permission, Fear of not being taken seriously, Fear of talking about mental health, Fear of being outed, Worry that care wouldn't be effective.
