Kumukahi Health + Wellness (KHW) is seeking to hire a full-time Harm Reduction Services Specialist in the West Hawai'i area to join our dynamic team of health advocates. This person is responsible for the implementation of syringe exchange services for people who inject drugs and provide culturally sensitive HIV, Hepatitis, and STD testing education and harm reduction tools at the Kumukahi Health + Wellness (KHW) Kailua-Kona location as well as on an outreach basis, to targeted populations including, people who use needles, men who have sex with men (MSM), people of trans and gender non binary experience, and youth. Provides current information and educational services to prevent the spread of HIV and HCV infection. Will be certified under the state of Hawaii Department of Health to provide HCV and HIV testing and counseling.

  • Reports to Kona office Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm unless otherwise discussed with supervisor.

  • Attend weekly PO’E meetings in person or virtually

  • Provide Syringe Exchange Services (SES) in an office setting to program participants.

  • Complete all necessary paperwork and reporting for KHW Syringe Exchange Services.

  • Maintain and track inventory and supplies for KHW SES.

  • Attend monthly check-in meetings with SES contract agency HHHRC.

  • Submit monthly SES reports (number of clients, number of needles exchanges, inventory counts) to the Director of Harm Reduction Services.

  • Submit monthly logs and enrollment forms to the contract funder.

  • Complete HIV and HCV OTL certification training and subsequent training required for continued certification

  • Provide in-office HIV, HCV, and STI testing

  • Complete all necessary documentation and logs for testing services

  • Identify and refer testing participants to other necessary services within KHW programs to support their Health and wellness.

  • Implement harm-reduction counseling sessions to assist individuals in making positive behavioral changes.

  • Participate as an active and effective member of the prevention outreach and education team

  • Assist in the production and distribution of educational materials as needed.

  • Encourage and support HIV+ individuals to access services to maintain their health and reduce their risk of transmitting HIV.

  • Carry out and complete all other related duties as assigned by the Director of Harm Reduction Services (DHRS) and/or the Executive Director.

  • Participate in training and educational programs necessary to keep abreast of the latest HIV information as required by the Foundation.

  • Keep records of all educational activities and provide documentation to DHRS as required by various contracts.

  • Attend in person or by telephone the monthly joint staff meeting.

  • Abides by all policies set forth in the employee manual including timely submission of timesheets, forms, etc.

  • Helps develop positive relationships with others in the community.

  • Participate in the fundraising activities of the Foundation.

  • Willing to work some nights and weekends for outreach events.

  • Knowledge of HIV, STD, and hepatitis in Hawai'i

  • Ability to connect with members of the target population

  • Experience working with people who use substances

  • Cultural sensitivity with a willingness to work with people of diverse ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, as well as people with HIV

  • Willingness and proven ability to work cooperatively with other people

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Good communication skills

  • Promptness to staff and team meetings

  • Flexibility with schedule and willingness to work at events, as needed

  • Provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination upon hire

  • Valid HI driver’s license

  • High school or equivalent (Required)
