Kumukahi Health + Wellness (KHW) is seeking to hire a part-time Harm Reduction Specialist in the West Hawai'i area to join our dynamic team of health advocates. This person is responsible for the implementation of syringe exchange services for PWID and provide culturally sensitive HIV, Hepatitis, and STD testing education and harm reduction tools at KHW - Kailua-Kona location as well as on an outreach basis, to targeted populations including, people who use needles, to men who have sex with men (MSM), people of trans and gender non-binary experience and youth. Provides current information and educational services to prevent the spread of HIV and HCV infection. Is certified under the state of Hawaii Department of Health to provide HCV and HIV testing and counseling.

  • Performs HIV, STD, and hepatitis prevention and education, which promotes safer sex and safer injection practices based on Harm Reduction principles.

  • Provides face-to-face and online outreach to the target populations: people living with HIV and their partners, transgender individuals, gay and bisexual men, sex workers, and people who inject substances.

  • Distributes condoms and other risk reduction related materials to target populations.

  • Co-facilitates support groups and safer sex workshops for target populations with other outreach workers, including administering pre/post quizzes.

  • Maintains accurate and complete log sheets/field notes, including number and type of contacts made, number of participants in support groups and workshops, and detailed demographic information for evaluation purposes.

  • Participates in workshops and in-service training at agencies, prisons, and other facilities.

  • Provides clients with advocacy and referral assistance.

  • Disseminates information about HIHAF’s programs and information to improve harm reduction skills.

  • Serves as a liaison to other service organizations

  • Refer uninsured individuals to medical insurance.

  • Assists with quarterly reports.

  • Knowledge of HIV, STD, and hepatitis in Hawai'i

  • Ability to connect with members of the target population

  • Experience working with people who use substances

  • Cultural sensitivity with a willingness to work with people of diverse ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, as well as people with HIV

  • Willingness and proven ability to work cooperatively with other people

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Good communication skills

  • Promptness to staff and team meetings

  • Flexibility with schedule and willing to work at events, as needed

  • Provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination upon hire

  • Valid HI driver’s license
